The factory that is used to create entity managers for a given persistence unit will generate entity managers to be of a specific transactional type. We went into detail in 6 about the different types of entity managers, and one of the things that we saw was that every entity manager must either use JTA or resource-local transactions. Normally, when running in a managed server environment, the JTA transaction mechanism is used. It is the default transaction type that a server will assume when none is specified for a persistence unit and is generally the only one that most applications will ever need, so in practice the transaction type will not need to be specified very often. If the data source is required by the server, as it often will be, a JTA-enabled data source should be supplied (see the Data Source section). Specifying a data source that is not JTA-enabled might actually work in some cases, but the database operations will not be participating in the global JTA transaction or necessarily be atomic with respect to that transaction. In situations such as those described in 6, when you want to use resource-local transactions instead of JTA, the transaction-type attribute of the persistence-unit element is used to explicitly declare the transaction type of RESOURCE_LOCAL or JTA, as in the following example: <persistence-unit name="EmployeeService" transaction-type="RESOURCE_LOCAL"/> Here we are overriding the default JTA transaction type to be resource-local, so all the entity managers created in the EmployeeService persistence unit must use the EntityTransaction interface to control transactions.

The database we will be using in our examples is the HSQL database. This is written in Java and is freely available Open Source software. The homepage of HSQL is http://hsqldb.sourceforge.net/ and we will be using version 1.7.3.3. In practice, we expect that any later version will also be suitable. HSQL is derived from a code originally released as Hypersonic. You may encounter the term in some of the HSQL documentation and should treat it as synonymous with HSQL. We assume in our examples that you will be unpacking HSQL to C:\home\hsqldb\ and that you will be using a database called Hibernate. First, create a directory to contain the Hibernate files, for example, C:\home\hsqldb\hibernate\, and then place the following file named server.properties (see Listing 3-1) into that directory:

The danger present in bulk operations and the reason they must occur first in a transaction is that any entity actively managed by a persistence context will remain that way, oblivious to the actual changes occurring at the database level. The active persistence context is separate and distinct from any data cache that the provider may use for optimizations. Consider the following sequence of operations: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. A new transaction starts. Entity A is created by calling persist() to make the entity managed. Entity B is retrieved from a find() operation and modified. A bulk remove deletes entity A. A bulk update changes the same properties on entity B that were modified in step 3. The transaction commits.

Locate in Registry Service This third method should be familiar with EJB developers. They often need to look up EJB object references on the JNDI registry service. In this case, the EJB objects are already created and registered in JNDI with a specific key. The objects may be located in a remote JVM, but JNDI makes lookup using this key quite similar to Listing 2-2. All these strategies are commonly called pull dependency injection. This is because the dependent object is pulled in by the object that ultimately uses it. I prefer to classify the pull methods as dependency resolution, rather than dependency injection. This is because the true dependency injection happens with IOC and is called push DI. In this approach, an external container or application framework creates and passes the dependent object to the object that requires it. The dependent objects are mostly supplied using constructor or setter methods. However, for this the application framework must know which dependent object to provide and which object to notify with the dependent object. It is interesting to note that EJB containers support not only pull DI (one session bean looking up another session bean, for instance, in the JNDI) but also push DI. This is evident from the setSessionContext(javax.ejb.SessionContext ctx) or setEntityContext (javax.ejb.EntityContext ctx) method where the context object is created, initialized, and passed to the EJB objects by the container. This is called setter injection. You can explore different varieties of push DI with examples in a later section when I touch upon the DI features of Spring IOC container.
