In this chapter, you learned to use T-SQL to drop both publications and subscriptions that were configured using the GUI method in 4. You also learned to configure the publication and pull, push, and anonymous subscriptions using the T-SQL method. By now you should be comfortable using both the GUI and T-SQL methods for configuring snapshot replication. While you can configure snapshot replication and other types of replication using the GUI method, T-SQL will offer you more flexibility, as you have seen in this chapter. Drop the pull subscription using the sp_droppullsubscription stored procedure, and drop the push subscription using the sp_dropsubscription stored procedure. Drop the publication using the sp_droppublication stored procedure. Dropping the publication does not drop the corresponding objects, either in the publication database or in the subscribing database.

Service Broker routes are SQL Server metadata objects created with the DDL statement CREATE ROUTE. Listing 7-1 shows the syntax for this T-SQL statement.

When you drop the subscription, you can clean the replication metadata using the sp_subscription_cleanup stored procedure. Publication is configured using the sp_addpublication, sp_addpublication, sp_ addpublication_snapshot, sp_grant_publication_access, and sp_addarticle stored procedures. The snapshot is uncompressed wherever the Distribution Agent is located. In the case of pull subscriptions, the snapshot is therefore uncompressed in the Subscriber server. Pull subscriptions are configured using the sp_addpullsubscription and sp_ addpullsubscription_agent stored procedures. Then on the Publisher server you need to register the subscription using the sp_addsubscription stored procedure. Anonymous subscriptions are configured using the sp_addpullsubscription stored procedure on the Subscriber server. On executing sp_addpullsubscription_agent, the stored procedure creates a scheduling job for synchronization of anonymous subscription, a type of pull subscription. Finally, on the Publisher server, you need to register the subscription using the sp_ addsubscription stored procedure. In the next chapter, I will show you how to generate different snapshot types. You will need this added flexibility to circumvent the overhead costs associated with the initial synchronization with snapshot replication.

Use the sp_helppublication stored procedure to check whether the publication supports push or pull subscription. Dropping a publication or an article does not mean that the corresponding objects are dropped from the publication or the subscription database. You need to manually drop those database objects. After dropping the subscription, use the sp_subscription_cleanup stored procedure to remove the replication metadata from the subscription database.
