Automated failovers are great to ensure that your systems recover quickly from most outages. But they are not enough. You must monitor your systems for any variety of error conditions, including system resource exhaustion (filesystems or memory fill-up), super-high CPU loads (which can resemble outages), network failures, and so forth. Most systems have automated monitoring tools that help trouble find your SAs, rather than the other way around. If the SAs don t have to spend time looking for problems, they are free to solve problems that find them, or to properly implement new systems. Framework products like BMC Patrol, Hewlett-Packard Open View, Tivoli Global Enterprise Manager, and Computer Associates Unicenter will monitor your systems for a variety of potential problems and then notify a preselected group of administrators via pagers, email, telephone calls, console displays, or other alarms.
